With the advancement in technology, there is a recent boom in the trend of the hair transplant with more than 400,000 procedures per year. FUE hair transplant is an advanced method without stitches or visible scar compared to other traditional methods. Moreover, thanks to many new FUE hair transplant techniques, the amount of time consumption and cost of this method has been reduced significantly.

The FUE hair transplant gained widespread popularity back in 2002 when it was introduced by an LA hair restoration surgeon Dr. William Rassman for the first time. The results may vary from men to women because of hair types and other factors. The follicular unit extraction method is unlike other hair transplant methods which removes a strip of skin and leave scars. FUE hair transplant move individual healthy hair follicles to the bald area. This particular hair transplant technology bears less pain and usually does not leave big visible scars after the surgery. Moreover, the healing time is shorter which is estimated to be around 7 days depending on client condition. Also the FUE hair transplant aims to provide the most natural look which is perfect for short hairstyles.

Hand Punch technique

Together with the fast growth of FUE hair transplant, various techniques are also developed to improve the quality of this procedure. For instance, the Hand punch technique allow surgeon to harvest the hair follicles one by one from the donor to the receptor area by hand with utmost care. However, this technique does not save a lot of time or give good protection to the hair follicles.

Power Punch technique

The Power punch technique was developed by Dr. Jim Harris from Denvor who is a pioneer in FUE hair transplant technology. The Power punches are specifically designed to extract hair follicles from donor areas with a hand piece in pen-like shape. They are made to penetrate skin with the depth control up to 2mm-3mm. The diameter of a Power punch which is made of stainless steel or titanium, ranges from 0.7 to 1.2mm. One of the main advantages of this FUE hair transplant technique is the speed to extract hair follicles without causing any damage to the grafts.  It is primarily a less costly procedure that is advisable for both men and women.

The most progressive hair transplant technology used in FUE is NeoGraft and ARTAS robotic device. These advanced procedures take shorter time and requires more technical expertise than its predecessor methods. The level of success in these two methods is considerably higher than the previous ones. The NeoGraft and ARTAS are machines that speed up the hair extracting process. While NeoGraft uses a manual hand-held system, ARTAS is a robotic assisted device.

NeoGraft technique

The NeoGraft hair transplant technique is a more fetching option for men and women, which vows to create more natural hairlines without stitches or pain. Moreover, the recovery time is quick, which allows the patient to resume to normal activities after a few fays. NeoGraft is a automatic machine with a suction tube to extract the hair follicles from the donor area. Once the hairs are grafted into the receptor area they’ll stay intact for around 2-3 weeks and will shed naturally afterwards but new hairs will begin to grow after approximate 3-4 months.

One important aspect of the NeoGraft technique is that it can also take hairs from beard area and transplants them into receptor area of the scalp if the tissues of two respective areas match. NeoGraft technique is suitable for men and women and more affordable compared to ARTAS robotic technology.

ARTAS robotic technology

ARTAS is known to be the most digitally progressive in FUE hair transplant technique that uses a robotic device instead of manual hand-held devices like other techniques. Although it is fairly a new FUE technique, the success rate is comparatively high. It does operate on an advanced level. The ARTAS machine will outline the donor area on the scalp to analyze the natural array of hairs. The surgeon will then guide the machine to randomly line the hairs which have been extracted from the donor area to the receptor area so that the natural appearance of the hairs won’t overlap. This procedure will be repeated until the desired amount of hairs is harvested into the targeted area.

This FUE hair transplant will also make sure that the extracted hair follicles will not be damaged. Unlike NeoGraft, ARTAS does not have a suction tube nor the surgeon have to remove the harvested hairs manually. ARTAS isn’t advisable for women apparently. It definitely is more expensive than other hair transplant technologies because of an automated robotic device involved. Because it is a robotic device, it cannot comprehend lighter hair and is most advisable for darker hairs.

There are certain limitations to the ARTAS technique, FUE hair transplant technique. Since it is a new advanced method, it does require plenty of experience and highly skilled surgeons to perform the hair transplant surgery otherwise the results would not be accurate. The prime reason hair transplant surgeons prefer this method is because ARTAS uses computer technology that instructs the device to remove the hair follicles one by one. Also it is (almost) a pain-free procedure and the client can revert back to normal life after the surgery in no time.
